Whether you're new to Chicago and looking to meet people in the city or want to give back in your free time, Center on Halsted is the place to volunteer if you want to help strengthen the LGBTQ community. The volunteers at the Center help with special events, serve meals for seniors, monitor the Cyber Center, greet visitors at the Reception Desk, welcome and check-in guests, take calls on a 24-hour Crisis Line and much, much more! To get started, new volunteers must register to attend an orientation session and a training session. These orientations are your chance to learn more about the history of the Center, the programs and services offered by the Center, upcoming and ongoing volunteer opportunities and to take a tour of the Center, an award-winning building. The new training sessions are fun and interactive and include LGBTQ 101 and cultural competency training to help further develop individual skill levels and empower volunteers to advance the LGBTQ movement. It's also an opportunity for the Center to learn about your skills, talents and experiences and answer any questions you might have about volunteering at the Center. Center on Halsted has a strict confidentiality policy for our volunteers to protect the privacy of the clients. As part of this policy, the Center requires all program volunteers to be 22 years of age or older. The Center does accept court- ordered volunteer service but on a case-by-case basis.
